With campaigning for the Hisar Lok Sabha byelection coming to an end on Tuesday evening, the stage is set for a triangular contest between the ruling Congress, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Haryana Janhit Congress-BJP combine.
The past fortnight saw frenzied campaigning with all three candidates — Jai Prakash of the Congress, Ajay Chautala of the INLD and Kuldeep Bishnoi of the HJC-BJP going full steam.
The trio is locked in a tough contest for the seat, which fell vacant after the death of Bishnoi’s father and former chief minister, Bhajan Lal.
Polling will take place on October 13 and votes will be counted on October 17.
The arrival of Team Anna in Hisar gave a new dimension to the campaigning as the social activists crossed the entire length and breadth of the constituency, opposing the Congress. While the anti-corruption catchphrase was a fad for all the candidates during their campaign, it was local issues like discrimination in terms of jobs and development, law and order and caste equations which figured prominently during the canvassing.
The campaign had leaders such as the BJP’s Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Navjot Sidhu campaigning for their candidate while Congress leaders Sheila Dixit and Raj Babbar campaigned for theirs while TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu did the same for INLD.
