In a surprise development, Tamil Nadu assembly Speaker D Jayakumar resigned on Saturday, an official said. The reason for his decision is still not known.

According to a statement issued by the AMP Jamaludeen, secretary to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Jayakumar has resigned his office "with effect from the forenoon of 29th September 2012."

Till such time the assembly speaker's position is vacant, the duties of the office will be performed by the deputy speaker P Dhanapal.
Jayakumar was not available for comments on his decision to resign.
