"We will roll out our WiMAX broadband for consumers by the end of this calendar year," Srinivas Addapali, vice-president, strategy, told Hindustan Times.

Wi-MAX is a next generation technology that provides high speed wireless Internet access and connects individual homes and business as far as 30 miles from the central site with long-range frequencies.

The international long distance carrier had commercially rolled out broadband WiMAX for corporate customers in Banglore last May.

"We are in the process of rolling out the network in 10-12 cities that include Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai" said Adappali. "A considerable amount of our capital expenditure of Rs 2250 crore for this year will be earmarked for the WiMAX broadband rollout, he added.

BSNL also recently announced expression of interest to roll out WiMAX based broadband in rural areas and is expected to launch services across cities in 2008. Besides, Dishnet is also an early player in the area.
