After being interrogated in Panaji for several hours on Sunday, Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal, who is accused of sexually assaulting a junior colleague, on Monday underwent mandatory medical examinations, which included potency and blood tests.

Police sources said while the potency test was necessary to establish whether the accused was physically capable of the rape he is accused of, the blood tests and other medical examinations are mandatory every two days when an accused is in police custody.

Tejpal was taken to Goa Medical College near Panaji for the potency test before being taken for other tests, the sources added.

A Goa court on Sunday sent Tejpal to six days in police custody for interrogation over the rape charges filed by the victim, who has since quit the magazine.

Earlier on Sunday, Tejpal was brought to a magistrate’s court where he was remanded in police custody for six days.

Tejpal’s family members and friends weren’t allowed in the court room, neither was the media.

The Panaji police station lock-up does not have a fan and inmates sleep on the floor. He spent Saturday night there with six other men, including two accused of murder, a police official said.
