The three Tehelka journalists whom the victim confided in after she had been allegedly raped by Tehelka co-founder Tarun Tejpal are likely to record their statements before a magistrate in Panaji on Friday.

“The date has been given,” said a Goa police officer.

The Goa police had earlier recorded their statements in Delhi during the first round of investigation. Recording a statement before a magistrate helps ensure a case is water-tight.

The statement of former Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury will be recorded on Saturday, the police have said.

In an emailed complaint to Chaudhury, the victim had detailed the supposed offence. However, Chaudhury has been accused of not doing enough in the matter.

The Goa police have also refused to comment on reports that Tejpal have told investigators the alleged assault was “consensual”.

“I would not like to share anything at this stage (of the investigation),” said OP Mishra, deputy inspector general of police, Goa.

Meanwhile, the lock-up in which Tejpal is staying now has two murder-accused and two booked for drug-related offences. Tejpal had a separate cell on Thursday night, though without a fan.

The police have custody of Tejpal for one more day and will produce him in court on Saturday once the six-day remand ends. They can ask for an extension if they think he needs to be interrogated further.
