A local court on Saturday sentenced Abdul Karim Telgi, the kingpin of the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
The Special Court also sentenced 16 persons to five years of rigorous imprisonment.
Judge Chandrashekhar Patil also imposed fines of Rs 50,000 each on charges registered under sections 256 and 259 of the IPC against Telgi (for possession of material for printing fake stamp paper) in 2001.
In case of failure of paying the fine, he will have to spend another four years in prison. Fine of Rs 10,000 each was imposed on the rest of the accused.
With the sentence, the Special Court has completed the hearing of all the nine cases registered in Karnataka related to the scam.
“As you have not been taken into custody for investigation in this case, you will have to undergo imprisonment for the complete term (seven years)," the Judge told Telgi.
The accused were produced before the court using video conferencing facility. Telgi’s counsel MT Nanaiah told reporters that an appeal will be filed to reduce the sentence after considering the period Telgi has spent in Bangalore and Pune’s Yerwada prison since 2002.
Telgi has been so far convicted in 46 such cases across the country and is going to complete ten years of stay in the prison by November this year.
