The state news agency Petra quoted local officials as saying the accident occurred when construction workers were pouring cement for the bridge near Mujib dam.

More than seven people were hurt.

It was unclear whether the casualties were workmen. The dam project, awarded to a Chinese construction firm, was to be completed by year's end at a cost of $50 million.

The dam is one of several multi-million dollar projects along the Jordan Valley to ease a chronic water shortage.
