Ten villages flooded in Sundarbans

At least 10 villages in Sundarbans were flooded on Monday as water from the rivers entered the villages during high tide, officials said.

"The villages in five gram panchayats of Hasnabad, Sandeshkhali-I and Sandeshkhali-II blocks of North 24-Parganas district were flooded after river water breached the embankments," District Magistrate of North 24 Parganas Vinod Kumar said.

Forty embankments on the rivers were breached, officials said.

Many houses were flooded and paddy fields went under saline water from the rivers of estuarine areas of Sundarbans, officials said.
