A secret survey by security agencies has found that scores of members of parliament have let out their houses or portions of these on rent, posing grave threats to themselves and their fellow VIPs.
According to the findings of the survey, carried out just before Independence Day on Aug 15, many MPs have no idea about the persons staying in their apartments and bungalows, located in the city's high-security zone.
While many of those staying in the houses are probably relatives or from the MPs' constituencies, the others - probably the majority - are tenants who shell out between Rs.3,000 and Rs.6,000 a month for the space they occupy.
This, say security officials, is a highly dangerous affair and could one day lead to some unexpected crisis.
There are more than 700 houses that are allotted to MPs, who don't live in them round the year as they frequently go to their constituencies. Even MPs from Delhi who have their own private houses have been holding government accommodation.
Some of the MPs admitted that some, if not many, of their colleagues illegally sublet their flats or rooms and garages in their premises to make a fast buck.
