A police constable and two others were injured when an unruly mob pelted stones in protest against stone pelting at a Bouddha Vihar at Panchasheel Nagar in north Nagpur on Saturday afternoon.
Tension prevailed in north Nagpur, pre-dominantly a dalit locality, since this morning after some miscreants pelted stones at a religious place on Friday night where some women were preparing meals.
The news spread like a wildfire in the area on Saturday morning and people gathered on the main road in Pachpaoli area. The mob pelted stones at nearby areas and set afire at least five vehicles, including two police vans.
The joint Commissioner of police Anoop Singh and other senior police officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the unruly mob.
The injured police constable was identified as Jageshwar Choudhary. He sustained severe head injuries. He was rushed to a local private nursing home where he is reported to be out of danger, the city police informed.
“We had mobilized senior police officials and policemen reached the spot within 25 minutes of the incident. Now situation is totally under control and there is no report of untoward incident in the area,” KK Pathak, the commissioner of police, said.
