The National Commission for De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes has suggested giving "territorial" rights to those communities for their educational, economic and social development with a view to integrating them in the national mainstream.

"They should be given territorial rights which would facilitate them voting rights", Balkrishna Sidram Renka, the chairman of the reconstituted Commission told reporters.

Expressing concern over the plight of over seven to 10 per cent of the total population belonging to these communities, he suggested a comprehensive survey to ascertain their educational, economic, social and other status so that effective steps could be taken to overcome it.

The Commission has been reconstituted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to look into various aspects of the socio-economic development of the De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic tribes.

While reconstituting the Commission, the Ministry has asked it to submit its report within one year of the appointment of the Chairman.

Laxmanbhai K Patani has been appointed as Member of the Commission while Lakshmi Chand is the Member Secretary.
