Terror: Meghalaya forms crisis management panel

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and Guwahati, the Meghalaya government has constituted a State Crisis Management Group to deal with such in the event of such a crisis.

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and Guwahati, the Meghalaya government has constituted a State Crisis Management Group to deal with such in the event of such a crisis.

An official release in Shillong said the government has reviewed the security situation and preparedness for responding to any situation, to contain the damage and casualties and for recovery and restoration of normalcy within reasonable time.

"It has been realized that crisis may arise, besides natural calamities, due to attack by extremists, terrorists,

communal violence, riots occurring within the state or outside but having impact within the state," the release said on Tuesday.

While the state already has in place its disaster management authority, the government felt the need to create the crisis management panel for timely response to threat assessment, deployment of resources, providing public services like fire extinguishers, medical transport, evacuations,communication and media management.

The crisis management group would be headed by the chief secretary and comprise of members that include the chairman and principle secretaries of different departments.

A sub group has been formed with senior defence officials under the chairmanship of the DGP to assist the management group.
