A terrorist was killed and a policeman injured in an exchange of fire between a group of unidentified ultras who had laid an ambush in central Assam's north Cachar Hills district, police said on Wednesday.
Reports on Tuesday night had said that only a policeman was injured in the gunbattle. However, police officials returning from the remote Khumunnum area said an insurgent was also killed in retaliatory firing.
His body was recovered from a jungle on Wednesday morning during search operations, police said.
An AK-47 rifle, two magazines, 136 rounds of live ammunition, Rs 4000 in cash and a cellphone were recovered from the slain extremist.
The injured constable, hit by three bullets on the left side of his chest, was admitted to Haflong Civil hospital and his condition was stated to be stable.
The police personnel, including officer incharge of Mahur police station, were ambushed by a group of 10 ultras at about 6 pm.
