STUDENTS OF the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) are disturbed over test schedule announced by the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) this year. The test dates are clashing with the prestigious event Odessey-2006, which may affect participation of students from other engineering colleges of the State.

Students had selected the dates for holding the Odessey-06 after considering several factors and were assured the test dates would be after February 26, the closing date for the event.
The event is being organised after a period of twelve years, as none of the earlier directors were in favour of this function. Though the exact reason of their indifference towards the festival is not known, some professors said it was to avoid ‘promotion to dances’. In fact, the whole festival remains committed to dancing spree, which many teachers did not like.
However, the present director of the institute allowed the students to hold the festival.
Students chalked out the event and decided final dates. Only two days back the UPTU fixed the test dates from February 23 to February 25. Though, the director of the institute, considering the plight of the festival organisers sought special permission to start the tests a day earlier, February 22. Since the test dates for other colleges will remain unchanged, physical participation of students of these colleges will be affected to a great extent.
However, almost all students have shown keen interest to participate on-line essay competition ‘India Inspired’ and video-conferencing likely to be held on February 25. The organisers have received several hundred entries from outstation students.

Similarly, ‘Techkriti-2006’ at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) also clashed with the HBTI festival, affecting participation of students in Odessey.
But, the IIT-K will also face participation crisis, as very few students of UPTU colleges will be able to join it due to examinations date clashing with Techkriti.
Above all, some bitterness among boys and girls over petty issue has led the girls staying away from the celebrations. But this issue would not affect much, said chief organiser of the festival Bhishekh Singh, as the differences were resolved amicably.
