Asked whether Thackeray was still in the ICU, Dr Parkar said: “Yes. From the medical point of view, we have advised him that he is fit enough to move out of the ICU. But he has decided to remain in the ICU as a matter of comfort and convenience.”

Thackeray was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Monday as his reports showed that he had suffered multiple episodes of heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood for the body, due to blocked arteries.

A team of doctors placed three stents to unclog the arteries. Angioplasty was a preferred procedure as Thackeray had already undergone bypass surgery in 1996.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan, who has been advised complete bed rest after he complained of stomach pain, inquired about Thackeray’s health.
