The Thai army said on Thursday it will send armoured vehicles to checkpoints around a protest encampment in central Bangkok, close major roads to the site, and urged businesses in the area to shut.

"In an operation to step up pressure and limit the protest area, we will bring in armoured vehicles to help protect officers from those militants among protesters," army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd told reporters.
"Roads into the area will be sealed off from 6 p.m. (Thursday) onward," he said.
