A three-storey vacant building collapsed on Monday in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi in Thane after heavy rains lashed the district inundating and cutting off several low-lying areas.

According to chief of Thane district disaster control, Jaideep Visawe, the building came down crashing around 4am in the Padma Nagar locality. There was no loss of life as 75 people residing in the building had been evacuated recently, he said.

A portion of this building had come down a couple of days ago following which fire officials evacuated the occupants.

The city received a total of 139 mm rainfall till 6am since on Sunday, throwing normal life out of gear, Disaster Control officer Santosh Kadam said.

Also, there were two incidents of wall and slab crash on a drain due to incessant showers in the town.

Continuous rains and flash floods cut-off some remote areas in the district, leaving thousands marooned.

Reports reaching district headquarters said the river at Maswan in Manor (Palghar) was overflowing as a result of which the bridge was totally submerged under water.
