Large quantities of water were wasted after the 40-year-old pipe gave way just as civic workers were completing repairs after it burst the first time on Wednesday.

“The 75-mm pipe at Louiswadi first burst on Wednesday morning.

Officials of the Thane Municipal Corporation worked continuously and fixed it in 18 hours. Just as we were completing the work, workers from the Public Works Department (PWD) came and started repairing the damaged road,” said K D Lala, TMC city engineer.

He explained that the PWD team then filled up potholes, levelled the road and drove a road roller over it, in the process damaging the alignment of the newly repaired pipe. One of the joints slipped and the pipe burst again on Friday.

The TMC has now warned the PWD not to take up levelling work on the road immediately.
