With reference to the editorial Overdoing the guilt (Our Take, July 27), the BJP’s ruckus over Gujarat Minister of State for Home Amit Shah’s arrest defies logic. It is surprising that senior leaders of the party do not realise that accusing the Congress of manipulating the workings of the Central Bureau of Investigation can backfire. It should let the law take its own course and avoid being in news for for all the wrong reasons.

Going against the grain
It’s appalling to know that millions of tonnes of foodgrain, which could have fed about 140 million poor Indians for over a month, were left to rot by the government (48,315 tonnes of wheat procured by Punjab fit only for cattle, July 27). The godowns of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) are ill-equipped to store even half the amount of foodgrain that the government procures from farmers. This is not the first time that grain has gone waste in India. The government is even refusing to acknowledge the gravity of the problem. It is a clear case of criminal negligence on the Centre’s part.

If the government was aware of the FCI’s inability to store the entire produce, it should have distributed the surplus foodgrain to state governments to avoid wastage. That would have helped the nation prevent hundreds of hunger deaths. Agriculture Minister Sharad
Pawar is responsible for the present mess. There is absolutely no policy on either increasing farm productivity or managing the produce. Pawar should not just be expelled but also put behind the bars for pushing India into one of the worst-ever hunger crisis.
