With reference to the report Probe to catch ISI moles in the army (October 24), the links between defence personnel and ISI agents is a matter of great concern. After the Navy war room ‘leak’ case and the theft of strategic information from the DRDO, counter-intelligence and surveillance measures should have

been tightened. Rather than blaming the ISI for intruding into our armed forces, we must make our citadel secure and those found guilty must be punished irrespective of their rank.

Challenge before Antony
Apropos of the report Crown of thorns awaits minister (October 25), it will be interesting to see if AK Antony is taken in by the pelf and splendour of the military or he is able to rein in its profligacy. The other test of his integrity will come from India’s notorious arms dealers. The services and ordnance factories have a major role in the research and development by the DRDO and in integrating these with the civilian sector. The challenge before Antony is to exploit the vast potential of the armed forces in enhancing India’s role in regional as well as international affairs. Getting the army to dilute the Armed Forces Special Powers Act will be a Herculean task where he will certainly have to draw upon his philosophical reserves.

{{/usCountry}}In national interest
Apropos of the editorial No longer marooned (October 25), it is heartening that Mahinda Rajapakse and Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have come to
an understanding to resolve the conflict. In the wake of this development, the LTTE should come to the negotiation table for an amicable solution.

Sting without hurting
Apropos of Abhishek Singhvi’s article Whither the ethics (October 25), sting operations should confine themselves to matters concerning genuine public interest. It must be ensured that anybody’s privacy is not unnecessarily violated.
