Be prepared. The next time, graduates head out for an interview they could be asked to give the synonym for god. The Spiritual Quotient is fast replacing the Intelligence Quotient as well as the Emotional Quotient in the corporate world.

In fact, many companies consider this to be an essential part of their prospective employee’s profile. The Spiritual Quotient encompasses several dimensions like compassion, wholeness, self-esteem, gratitude, spirit of surrender, service and ego.

Girish I, a spiritual guru explains, “While intelligence and emotional help us to solve complex problems and create positive relationships, they do not develop the human psyche completely.”

Hiring criteria
Some companies are now actively looking out for employees that score high in the spiritual area because they are believed to be more productive and goal-oriented.

“Yes, you need knowledge and skills to perform. However, your spiritual intelligence builds a conducive atmosphere in the organisation,” says Nandini Mazumdar, HR consultant. Ultimately it depends on you. If you have joined the company just to make money then the Spiritual Quotient will hold no importance. But if you have joined to serve, then it will make all the difference in the world.”

Stress continues to be an overwhelming cause for concern. With long working hours and intense competition, the workplace can sometimes resemble a war zone. “Spirituality means meditation and yoga, which are proven stress busters. It is especially applicable in high stress areas, " says Nikhil Patil, call center executive.

Not everyone agrees with this philosophy. Dr Seema Triwedi, psychologist, says, “Different people have different definitions of spirituality. If you are doing your work sincerely then according to me you are spiritual.”
