When things go wrong for a politician who gets egg on his face for some gaffe or a filmstar caught in an indelicate position, whom do they instinctively blame? The media, of course. The media has lamented long that the messenger should not be shot, but it would seem that there is nothing like a potshot or two at the media to keep people’s spirits up.
And when it comes to the economy, we want only good news. Along comes the media and tells us that everything is not quite hunky-dory and that the designer watch you have been eyeing may have to wait a bit. Irrational pessimism about the economy is something we were hoping not to hear about but for those party poopers, the media. Yes, many of our friends are out there in the unemployment queue, the EMIs are piling up, but why, oh, why must we talk about it in the media? Now the more sensible among us know that if the media would keep its trap shut, there would not be so much gloom and doom about the economy. All this commitment to truth is all very fine, but not when the media decides to rain on our parade. The media would be better employed, those of them who still have offices to go to, to reflect accurately the eternal optimism of our government mandarins.
Their message — where is the recession when the fundamentals of the economy are rock solid? And all those people wandering about mumbling in the bitter twilight are just professional Cassandras. And the media had better get this write.
