In a market where wedding couture means traditional lenghas, saris and salwar kameezes, it’s refreshing to see Lebanon-based designer Abdul Halder’s collection.
Showcasing ethereal white wedding gowns in elegant silhouettes, Abdul hopes to match the standards of European couture.
“Indian designers miss out on a lot of technical and engineering details. Here design is limited to embroidery and designers forget how to make garments look chic.”
While he showcased his debut collection at the recently held Lakme Fashion Week, Abdul plans to launch his self titled clothes brand.
“I’ve focused on silhouettes and cuts and used tons of fabric.” While Abdul’s collection mainly targets the Indian Christian market and the middle-eastern and western markets, he also has Punjabi clients who ask for customised gowns for Hindu weddings.
Abdul’s detailing consists of pearls, silver and Swarvoski work and Italian and French lace, while he plays with fabrics such as fine English net, pure silk duion and taffeta. Hoping to design a la Cavalli, Abdul’s next prêt collection will be funkier as it is inspired by wild horses.
Adbul Halder graduated from the Pearl Academy of Fashion in 2000, and according to the the designer made creations for Michael Jackson. He now works for the Middle East.
