Had plans to kill jailed mafiosi

SLAIN CONSTABLE Ashok Pandey had tried to stop three miscreants riding a motorbike when one of them hurled a bomb killing him on the spot, said a police officer. Identifying the miscreant killed in the encounter following Pandey’s murder as Amit Chaube of Oraon, Phulpur in Varanasi district, the cop said around six sharpshooters from Varanasi had come to bump off Sujit Yadav, presently lodged in Naini central jail here. Sujit is an accused in Dr Kartik Sharma’s kidnapping case.
They had been reportedly hired to kill Sujit by a mafiosi Mahendra alias Babloo Misra, a resident of Vikrampur, Phulpur, in Varanasi district. Babloo had been reportedly baying for Sujit’s blood for masterminding a murderous attack on him at Varanasi collectorate more than a year ago.
The attackers in this abortive attack were reportedly attired in black coats worn by lawyers. In today’s attack also the constable’s killer was wearing a black coat which he took off after the murder and reportedly threw away.
The assassins had planned to kill Sujit during his transit to the sessions court for appearance in a case from Naini jail. But their information turned out to be incorrect as Sujit’s next transit date is on September 28.
Only the other day, Sujit Singh had sent copies of a letter to mediapersons from the jail, expressing apprehension of his murder at the behest of a local MP and MLA during his transit to the sessions court where he is brought for appearance.

As a result, the miscreants who were putting up in Civil Lines, were roaming around when head constable Ashok Pandey tried to stop them on suspicion, said the officer.
Meanwhile, SSP Vijay Singh Meena, while talking to HT from Lucknow, said the killed miscreant had been identified as Vinay Singh. He said his real identity would be established late in the night.
The SSP said the family of the killed constable would get ex- gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh. Besides, the district police would contribute a day’s salary, thus collecting another Rs 5 to 6 lakh for the cop’s family.
Cops who gunned down the miscreant would be given out-of- turn promotions.
