Defining love can be quite a difficult task. We can feel it, but can't express it well enough. Chambers dictionary describes it as "an affection of the mind caused by that which delights.”
We often hear people say, “I love you” to others. Do they really mean it?
I wonder whether these words come from their hearts or it is just a formality. Or is it a way to please or flatter someone? Some people don’t mind saying it a hundred times. Does it mean that they are firm and sincere in their statement?
The other day, there was the news of a priest in Goa who got drowned in the sea while saving the lives of three persons. They were all on a picnic at the beach, where the three youths got entangled in a turbulent wave in the sea and washed away by the violent wave.
Others realised the seriousness that their companions’ lives were in danger, and shouted for help. But nobody came forward to help, except the priest. Sensing the need to act instantly and yet fully aware of the danger before him, without a second thought, he jumped into the sea and saved their lives one after another. He was fulfilling his duty as their guardian and saviour. In the process, he lost his life. This sacrifice was true love and the youths, whom he saved, experienced it.
It was the priest who gave them a second life. Will a day pass without their remembering the priest and his deed? He did what the Bible wants us to do, “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.”
