The editorial Cruising to the future on Highway 60 (August 15) reminds us of what Swami Vivekananda said: ‘If the blood supply is in the face alone, and the whole body is deprived of it, it cannot be called health, so if the cities prosper at the cost of villages, it cannot be called prosperity’. Today we see casteism, illiteracy, corruption, crimes, etc everywhere in our society and nationalism and patriotism are anathema to humanism.

Left in the lurch

Apropos of the editorial Call the bluff (August 13), much to the chagrin of the Left Front which has been hoodwinking the UPA at the drop of a hat, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has picked up the gauntlet thrown down by its leaders on the nuclear deal with the US. The PM has shown the Left its political place in running the government. This is an indirect, but well-calculated move to control the Left menace.

The Left Front’s move is intended to increase its tally in the next general elections. That is why every opportunity is taken to question UPA policy initiatives. The PM’s stand on the US deal can force the Left to capitulate, instead of withdrawing support.

Building blocks

In ‘India @ 60 — Art & Soul — sixty Indians who keep us culturally sound...’ (August 14), Hafeez Contractor has been named as “the architect associated with everything from the National Stock Exchange to the DLF City Centre…”. Contractor is not the architect of the National Stock Exchange. We are the architects of this prestigious project in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex. Such mistakes harm professional interests. Another mistake was in calling Pannalal Ghosh a vocalist. He was a flautist.
