A certain Mr Dhoble may be forcing you to wrap up your party early, but an unusual group is exempt from all these nightlife restrictions — the city’s canines. These party animals (pun intended) will be living it up today at an event at Fellas Café, Khar, to socialise and bond with fellow members. And this is one exclusive party — only beagles are on the guest list.
“We organise parties for dogs. We do it because there isn’t much space otherwise for canines to get together in Mumbai. They meet, play and hang out for a while,” says Ragani Parmar of Party Barky Hai, the group that is organising the event. She and partner Shivani Mathur have organised several such events in the last year for pooches of different breeds. However, this is the first time they are organising a party for beagles.
Twenty beagles from across the city have already been signed up for this event after passing a screening process. Parmar says, “Once pet parents fill the forms, we screen the canines to find out more about them. If it has any behavioural issue, we set the floor in a manner that will help tackle it. But we never deny entry. However, considering the space available to us, we don’t accept more than 20 entries at a time.”

Another reason to hold such parties is to allow owners of the same breeds to meet each other and discuss their concerns. “Pet parents are given tips on health and exercise, they are taught breed-specific games and they can get their doubts on ways to deal with their dog clarified. It helps them socialise as well.”
So how do you get your dog signed up? Parmar says, “Just drop us an email and we will keep you updated on the next party.” We’d say go ahead and do it. This party’s unlikely to get busted.
