Theme parties are the go-to option for those who hate planning too much. We’ll make it even easier for you to throw one with these easy checklists, from the hottest trends of the year gone by to the classic. Get your party gear together and welcome 2013 in style.

Olympics
Arguably the biggest sporting extravaganza of the year (it beats the Euro by quite a margin) this was also India’s best run at the centuries-old event. Even if you can’t climb two flights of stairs without a drinks break, celebrate our silvers and bronzes by playacting like an Olympian.

Wear: You have two options here — opt for sporty attire like spandex shorts and country tees, or make like a Grecian and wear a toga or a column dress with an olive wreath on your head.
Eat: Greek food is hard to find in the city, but you can make do with Lebanese or Moroccan food from Otto Infinito, Amadeus or Moshe’s. Another option would be to serve athlete food like energy bars, protein shakes (spiked, of course) and fruit.
Play: Sport anthems like Seven nation army by the White Stripes, Final countdown by Europe, Chak de from Chak De! India and the Rocky theme. Blockbuster

Salman Khan
Psy

Wear: Brogues, a dandy suit, bowtie, coiffed hair and sunglasses. Oh, and a creepy smile.

Eat: Beef Bulgogi from BusaGo; kimchi and coffee to keep it classy like Psy.

Play: K-pop playlist 2012 on YouTube, Gee and Mr Taxi by Girls’ Generation and Lucifer by Shinee.

Beach

Couldn’t make it to Goa? Let the beach come to you then. This classic theme doesn’t require much advance planning. And the warm December in Mumbai is just perfect for beach attire.
Wear: Tropical shirts and shorts for men. Coveralls, shorts and tank tops for women. Straw hats, flip flops and sunglasses are a must for everyone.
Eat: Seafood and fresh fruit. Your cocktail options are unlimited: pina coladas, rum punches, beers, margaritas, Mai Tais and daiquiris. Serve everything with a paper umbrella and a lemon wedge.
Play: Reggae, Goan and dance music.
