What is the status of waste segregation in the city?

Waste segregation has increased in the city with 800 ALMs separating dry and wet waste. Many rag-pickers are engaged in segregation because they realise that waste has economic value. About 800 tonnes of waste is segregated but this purely unorganised.

Citizens complain that while societies segregate waste, the civic van collects it but offloads it altogether in the dumping yard.

The civic body collects waste separately and there are many wards where vans collect dry waste twice a week. But since there is not enough citizen involvement, our solid waste management efforts have been devised in a manner where the processing in landfills needs both wet and dry waste.

Please elaborate.

For instance, to process waste at the Kanjur Marg dump yard, we need 3,000 tonnes of mixed waste and 1000 tonnes of only wet waste for composting. While Deonar would again need both kinds of waste, Mulund dump yard only takes in dry waste from hotels.

A tender was awarded for a waste processing plant costing Rs4,500 crore at Deonar but nothing has happened yet.

What is status of the Kanjur Marg dumping ground?

It has been partially opened and receives 4000 tonnes of waste every day. There will be seven bioreactors installed over seven years, which will process the waste at the landfill.
