They conducted the heist after locking the guard on duty at the ING Vysa Bank ATM kiosk in a cupboard.

Surinder Singh, the guard, told the police a man wearing sunglasses barged into the kiosk with his face covered and directed him to switch the lights off.

“When I refused, he asked for the keys to the machine. Another man pointed a gun at my head and snatched them from me,” Singh said. The incident took place around 3.30 a.m.

The robbers gagged and tied Singh and locked him inside the cupboard.“I could hear one of them telling the other to reverse a vehicle,” added Singh.

The ATM was not affixed with the floor of the kiosk, Gurgaon police commissioner S.S. Deswal said. The robbers, clearly, did not want to waste time prising it open.

Within hours, the busted machine with the cash missing was recovered in bushes along a drain in Rohtak district, 60 kilometres from Gurgaon.

Police said the ATM was robbed of lakhs of rupees.

ING Vysa officials refused to comment on the incident or say exactly how much money was stolen.
