V Bharti Raja, 28, of the 85 armoured regiment, placed his INSAS rifle on his chin and took the extreme step late on Monday, police said

Posted at Ratnu Chak military station, Raja distracted a sentry posted at a picket by asking him to have a cup of tea.

“Then he shot himself. Hearing the gunshot, his colleagues ran towards Raja, only to find him lying in a pool of blood,” said Mohammed Aslam, station house officer of the Bari Brahmna area, who is investigating the case.

Raja’s family members in Tamil Nadu have been informed about the incident. The cause of the suicide was not immediately known.

Seven days back, on September 21, Havaldar Surinder Singh killed himself with his service rifle at the Sunjwan military station.

Two days before that, sepoy Divender Singh allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his quarters in Kaluchak.
