Thousands evacuated after ammonia leak in China

The leakage started at around 7:50 am in the factory in Dawu county when an ammonia pipe broke.

At least one person was killed, six were injured and about 20,000 residents living near a nitrogen fertiliser factory in central China's Hubei province were evacuated on Friday after ammonia leakage from the plant.

The leakage started at around 7:50 am in the factory in Dawu county when an ammonia pipe broke, assistant general manager of the Huangmailing Phosphorus Chemical Industry Group Company, Chen Yixin said.

Workers closed the valve of the pipe within an hour, stopping the leak, Xinhua news agency reported.
