Her party may have worked for the welfare of women in Bihar but that seemed to have been of no consequence to the lawmaker’s husband.
Ruling JD(U) MLA Bima Bharati was allegedly assaulted by her husband, Awadesh Mandal, a member of the Purnia District Board, at their house on Tuesday evening.
The Purnia police arrested Mandal on Wednesday after Bharati lodge a complaint.
She was referred to a medical centre in Patna for treatment after she received first aid at a government hospital here. Purnia SP NH Khan said an FIR had been registered against Mandal. The MLA in her complaint charged her husband with continuously torturing and issuing threats to her life over the past two days.
Bharati said on Wednesday, “It was too much. It had become increasingly difficult for me to discharge my duties as an MLA.” Mandal, once a member of Purnia’s notorious Faizan gang, faces several criminal cases in various courts. He had often claimed to be the local MLA, forcing Bharati to remain confined to the house.
A family member said, “Mandal used to interfere in every legislative matter and forced Bharati to remain a housewife. For the past few months, she had begun disobeying his diktats and this might have enraged him.”
