Three dimensional city models with help of satellite imagery and Geographical Information System inputs will be created for developing zonal plans ,checking unauthorized construction, better management of civic utilities in the country.

Ministry of Urban Development, Department of Science and Technology,Survey of India have decided to come together to make this data available to different user agencies and the general public.

At a Press conference here today Science and Technology Minister Kapil alongwith Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy pointed out that a Special Purpose Vehicle may be created by both the Ministries to handle data creation and disbursement to government agencies. The data will be made available to parties on license.

Mr Sibal said that in five year period 400 towns are to be covered and the data will be available to government agencies,planners and ever Collectors.

A pilot project had been taken up at Chandni Chowk where for an estimated cost of Rs.3 crore data of over 10,000 buildings is now available. A monitoring room has been set up beaming live coverage from some areas and the system has been handed over to the MCD,he said.The entire capital is to be similarly covered within next three years costing Rs.100 crores,he added.
