Three killed as rain batters Kerala

The impact of rain was all the more severe in the coastal belt in the current spell with strong winds touching speed of 50 to 60 kmph.

Three persons died and there was heavy losses to crop and property as rains battered most parts of Kerala, with the monsoon activity becoming vigorous since Sunday night.

According to the Meterological office office Director K Santhosh, strong winds reflected the prevalence of a steep pressure gradient in the West Coast, stretching upto the Maharashtra coast.

While one person was washed away in flash floods near Koilandy in Kozhikode district, two casualties were reported from Pathanamthitta district, officials said.

Sea-erosion has been strong in Alappuzha and Kasargode districts, where the official machinery has been geared up to meet the situation.

Power supply was disrupted in some parts of the capital city since the wee hours as uprooted trees snapped some vital lines. A KSEB official said work was on to resume the supply.

According to the Met office, Mannarghat and Munnal recorded heavy rainfall of 7 cm each in the 24 hours ended at 8.30 am on Monday.
