Three killed in wall collapse

Three persons, including a one-year-old boy, were killed in a wall collapse at an underconstruction building in Vasant Vihar, reports Sobhana K.

Three persons, including a one-year-old boy, were killed in a wall collapse at an underconstruction building in Vasant Vihar on Sunday noon. The incident occurred when the support wall of the proposed Meghalaya Bhawan building which was under construction caved in.A case of negligence has been registered against the contractor.

According to the police, the building was being constructed by the Meghalaya government. The labourers were constructing the basement wall at around noon, when the incident happened. Seven labourers were buried under the debris. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot for rescue operations. And it took them over an hour to pull the victims out of the debris. Three of them sustained serious injuries. They have been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. The injured have been identified as Sooraj, Tasleem and Sabina.

The dead have been identified as 22-year-old Sanjay, 20-year-old Khusbu and her one-year-old brother, Firdos. Firdos was playing near the site, at the time of the cave-in. Khusbu’s entire family, including father Mohammed Rustam and mother Meena Khatun, had been working at the site. Rustam, a labourer, sustained multiple fractures.

Sunday’s incident is a chilling reminder of the Jasola incident. Eleven labourers were killed, when the basement wall of an underconstruction shopping mall caved in. The next of kin of the deceased have been given an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh while Rs 50,000 has been extended to those seriously injured and Rs. 25,000 to those with minor injuries.
