Three militants killed in encounter in Assam

Three militants, including two ULFA cadres, were killed and another injured in two separate encounters in Assam today, police said.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of five NDFB militants, the army and police launched a joint operation in Naharbari village and in the encounter one NDFB militant was killed and another injured at around 4 am, they said.

However, four other militants, including the injured ultra, managed to escape.

Security forces recovered an AK-56 rifle, a Chinese grenade, 72 rounds of ammunition, several documents, including NDFB letter pads and receipts from the slain militant.

In another incident, two ULFA militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Garo Hills along the Assam-Meghalaya border at Mankachar bordering Bangladesh.

The slain militants have been identified as hardcore ULFA cadres Megha Hajong and Dinesh Rabha of the outfit's 109 Battalion.

The security forces recovered an AK-81 rifle and several explosives from the slain militants.

In stepped up operations in Guwahati, police arrested two persons and recovered explosives, including 15 electronic detonators, one kg of ammonium nitrate and fuse wire from Salbari in Noonmati area.
