Three unidentified Naxalites were killed in an encounter on Monday morning at Gangampally village of Anantapur distict, police said in Hyderabad.

District Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said that about six Naxalites were holding a meeting when a combing team asked them to surrender.

However, the Naxals opened fire at them prompting the police to retaliate. Three ultras were killed while their two accomplices managed to escape, he said.

Police recovered two country-made revolvers, tin bombs, 12 cartridges, detonators and gelatine sticks from the spot.

In another incident in Nalgonda district, the sarpanch of Tallavellamala village was allegedly killed by PWG Naxalites on Sunday night suspecting him to be a police informer and allegedly responsible for the death of seven Naxals in an encounter in April 2000, police said.

In Guntur district, a bus driver OT Sambasiva Rao, who had foiled attempt by PWG (CPI-ML) to set ablaze his bus five months ago, was gunned down at Nadendla village late on Sunday night, police said.
