The Maldivian Democratic Party said the arrests were proof enough that the government did not respect peaceful assembly.

The arrests were carried out on Sunday despite promises by the government to allow freedom of association in the recently released reform roadmap, the Minivan News said.

The arrests came ahead of a planned protest in Thinadhoo on April 14. Sources told the paper that the arrests were an attempt by the government to thwart a demonstration.
