Three police personnel seriously injured

Two persons have been arrested and cases registered against seven others for assaulting and seriously injuring an inspector.

Two persons have been arrested and cases registered against seven others for assaulting and seriously injuring an inspector, a sub-inspector and a constable when they tried to prevent a clash between two groups at a village near Sivaganga on Sunday, police said.

Police said one Kannan had hired a cook for a function and paid him an advance amount. However, the man did not turn up. Irked by this, Kannan, along with some men, went to Puliyadithamban village and entered into a verbal duel with the cook and others of the village, resulting in a clash.

A police team, comprising Inspector Sankar, SI Shanmuganathan and Constable Raja rushed to the village on receipt of information and tried to pacify both groups.

However, they turned their ire against the police and beat them up. All the three policemen have been hospitalised.

The Superintendent of Police, Nallasivam, rushed to the spot for an enquiry.

Armed police personnel have been posted in the village as a precautionary measures, police said, adding that the situation was now under control.
