A trademark feature of all of Manoj Night Shyamalan’s movies is a cameo appearance by the writer/director himself. In Unbreakable, his next blockbuster after The Sixth Sense, you can catch the reclusive director as a drug dealer in a stadium.
As with The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable – released just a year later in 2000 – has Bruce Willis in the lead. And like The Sixth Sense, this film too is a suspense thriller.
The plot unfolds with a horrific train crash that kills 131 people, except David Dunn (played by Willis) who doesn’t even have a scratch on him. The film also stars Samuel L Jackson who plays an obscure character (Elijah Price) who approaches Dunn with a seemingly far-fetched theory behind it all, rocketing off an enticing thriller with a sci-fi twist. Jackson and Willis also starred together in Die Hard with a Vengeance and Pulp Fiction, although in that film they were never on screen together at the same time.

The film – its working title was, No Ordinary Man — explores the role that myth plays in our civilisation and explores the way human beings use comic books to explore mythic dimensions of the real world. As in comic books, the main characters have their identified colour schemes. David’s is green and Elijah’s is purple. They show up in their clothes, the wallpaper and bed sheets in their houses, Elijah’s note to David, and various personal items, among others.

Starting January 23, Star Movies will telecast Shyamalan’s films at 9 pm for four nights.
