Representatives of Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, will on Tuesday revive talks with China on the autonomy issue after a 15-month deadlock.
The task force, headed by Prime Minister Samdhong Rinpoche, has drawn the agenda for the ninth round of talks, after its members met in Dharamsala on January 22.
“The delegation will reach China tomorrow (on Tuesday) for discussions with representatives of the Chinese leadership,” said a release by the Dalai Lama’s private office in Mcleodganj, which did not mention the venue of the meeting.
The five-member delegation is led by the Dalai Lama’s special envoys, Lodhi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen, who have been heading the talks with China since 2002 for the resolution of the Tibetan issue.
The other three members are Tenzin P. Atisha, secretary of international relations, Buchung K. Tsering, vice-president of international campaign for free Tibet, and Jigmey Passing from the secretariat of the Tibetan task force.
The delegation will stay in China for a week.
Last November, the Tibetan delegation had met officials of the Chinese United Front Works Department and submitted a memorandum for “genuine autonomy”, which was rejected by the Chinese, calling it a demand for “covert independence”.
On their return, Dalai Lama’s envoys said memorandum had sought more rights for Tibetan people within the provision of the Chinese constitution. However, China claimed there was “serious differences” in talks.
