Tibetans hopeful India will raise Tibet issue during talks

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visit has brought hope for the Tibetans that half a century old issue would come up when visiting dignitary sit across tables with host Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss border issue.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visit has brought hope for the Tibetans that half a century old issue would come up when visiting dignitary sit across tables with host Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss border issue.

While Tibet’s spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is away on religious tour to Sikkim, the Tibetan government in exile has guardedly welcomed Wen's visit tour to India “better relation with India will encourage the Chinese government to resolve the Tibetan issue which will have positive impact on the border related issue between the two countries” said Thupten Samphel spokesman of the Tibetan Government in exile. The Dalai Lama who escaped Lhasa in 1959 after failed uprising against the Chinese troops seeks more autonomy for his home land under the provisions of Chinese constitutions while the radical organizations stand for independence.

The Dalai Lama and Chinese government representatives have held nine round of inconclusive talks for resolving the half a century old issue. While, China has constantly rejected the Dalai Lama’s demand calling it as demand for independence in guise.

Student for Free Tibet has asked the Indian government to press for release Chinese Nobel Laureate Liu Xiabao. “Tibetans and Indian students call on India’s political leaders to press their Chinese counterparts for Liu Xiaobo’s freedom and for the release of all those jailed by Chinese for exercising their basic rights” Choedon added.
