Eating cheap but healthy food is one of the biggest concerns of outstation students living in PGs and on rent in Delhi. But this problem is solved by the dabbawalas or tiffin service providers in Delhi University’s North Campus, who provide home style-cooked food at affordable prices.

“Ours is a pure vegetarian tiffin service. Since girls eat less than boys, the package is also different. The cost of the full dabba is Rs 1,350 per month, while the half dabba is for Rs 950 month, which is generally eaten by girls,” says Kapil Arora of Healthy Tifin Services. While most of the dabbawalas keep a fixed menu, there are some who ensure that their clients don’t get bored with the same food everyday. There are also dabbawalas in the campus who specialize in regional cuisine. Lohit Da, a dabbawala who cooks Assamese food for his clients, says, “Since you cannot find a non-veg tiffin easily, many students come to us.”
