Jyoti Prakash Bezbarua had crossed the barrier and gone near the animals’ enclosure to take photographs of the two tigers. He had come with his family from Sibsagar district to visit Guwahati.

Divisional Forest Officer of the state zoo Narayan Mahanta said Bezbarua gave the guards on duty, who had stopped him from venturing near the barrier, a slip and crossed it to reach the last level from where the iron grills start.

“The person crossed over two barricades and went near an iron cage. He put his hand into the cage through a hole in the grill and wanted to take photographs of the tigers. There were two tigers and one of them attacked suddenly and tore his hand out. The other tiger also attacked him,” said the DFO of state zoo, Narayan Mahanta.

He was taken to Gauhati Medical College Hospital where he was declared brought dead. According to doctors, he was died due to excessive bleeding.

The tigress who attacked Bezbarua first is Dibya and her male companion’s name is Gobardhan.

In Kahilipara area of the city, a leopard was captured and relocated in the state zoo. The leopard had been on the prowl for the last two days in the area and the residents helped forest officials to capture the animal, forest department sources said.
