Henman's near-misses at Wimbledon are fast becoming part of British folklore, with four semi-final defeats in the last six years making him the nearly man of tennis.

But his surprising run to the French Open semi-finals on clay, the surface he detests most, will have given him a confidence boost ahead of his favourite tournament.

Enjoying perhaps the best form of his career, Henman would dearly love to silence the detractors who say he does not possess a major weapon or a ruthless streak.

One of the few true exponents of serve-and-volley tennis left in the game, Henman will be hoping his claycourt exploits do not hinder his chances on the green lawns.
