Heart surgery is no news in India but if a robot performs it, then it sure is.
Robot assisted heart surgery is a new cutting edge technology that require minimal incision, cause less blood loss, tissue damage and less infection while recovery of patients is quicker.
Chettinad Healthcity in Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu is the only centre in Asia which could perform robotic heart replacement surgery, preferred in the US and Germany, Director of the Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease and Robotic Surgery Centre at Chettinad HealthCity, R Ravi Kumar told reporters here.
The new highly-sophisticated US technology, introduced in India in 2000, was very precise in performance and could do complex jobs, he said yesterday.
"Robot-assisted surgery promises a way out at a time when stress levels are on the rise in India with a spurt in life-style diseases and heart ailments," Kumar said.
Quoting statistics, he claimed that robot-assisted surgery involved lesser incidence of convulsion, absolutely no adverse effect or any major complication and neurological disorder and lesser renal failure compared to conventional open heart surgery.
The new leading edge technology was also available at the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre and All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, the surgeon said.

{{/usCountry}}Citing the response to the new technology by Indian surgeons, Kumar said 40 such operations had been performed in the Chettinad Healthcity alone in 10 months.
The cost of robotic-assisted surgery was a little higher than conventional heart surgery, which cost between Rs 1.25 lakh and Rs 1.50 lakh at the Chettinad Healthcity, he said.
