‘Are you anorexic?’ A penetrative voice challenged my fashionably slim existence at a spa a few months ago. Despite the provocation, I restrained myself. She peered; I smiled. After a while, I replied: “No, I drink wine, that’s why.” she has become a friend ever since.

Now, as I write this, let me be fair in my declaration: it wasn’t only wine that brought her weight down by five pounds in about three months. But, it did definitely help her.

Let me tell you how. First, its availability is still ridiculously dispersed and this has ensured her calorific burn as she hunts out specific brands across the town. Second, wine doesn’t go well with chhole bhature, samosa, kachori, papdi chat or other such junk foods. Therefore, she had to try it with skewered marinated meats, spicy roasted vegetable chunks, roomali rotis, bland kormas and light biryani. The result: my friend has managed to shed weight. The flip side is that these days I have to deal with an amateur sommelier. According to reports, wine does help to combat anorexia and obesity, but for that one has to stick to the stringent limit of not more than two ounces.

But tell me, honestly, how many of us actually know its bashful, intriguing and bacchanalian journey that started from an accident when grape juice merrily combined with natural yeast and turned into alcohol?

The sugar of the juice and the yeast led to this wonderful heady blend. And the rest, as they say, is history.
