The demand was made by police commissioner SS Deswal in a meeting with Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday when a detailed presentation was made for the same in Chandigarh.

“More than 400 people have succumbed to accidents last year. Poor design, absence of safety measures like road crossings, etc, and absence of road engineering concept cause accidents. In the first five months this year, 153 people lost their lives, while 136 people died in 128 mishaps during the same period last year,” said SS Deswal, Gurgaon police commissioner.

On the contrary, in Gurgaon, only 36 murder cases have been registered in the first five months in 2011, while 78 cases were registered last year. Most accident victims are pedestrians.

“The city lacks proper crossings and related infrastructure, resulting in fatal accidents. To make the life of pedestrians safer and easier, we are in talks with the authorities concerned,” he added.
