Low lying areas of the state witnessed flood-like situation as incessant rains continued lashing the coastal state for the third day on Saturday.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) the state received 40 mm rains in last 24 hours, taking the total rainfall for this season to 238 cm.
The residents of Sankhalim and Bicholim, two neighbouring towns 50 km north east of Panaji, feared a possible flood as the river water levels here bloated, official sources said.
Valvonti river, passing through Sankhalim village, is fed water from Anjunem irrigation project and has a history of flooding villages on its banks.
The water resources department officials confirmed that the fourth flood gate of Anjunem irrigation facility was opened this afternoon as the water level in the dam increased. The dam is situated on the foothill on Goa-Karnataka border and excess rainfall in catchment of Karnataka increases the water level in it.
"We have warned the people downstream to remain cautious as the water is released in Valvonti river," a senior official said.
Water level in all the rivers of the state has reached near danger mark since it is raining for last four days. The met department has predicted continuous rains for next 24 hours and fishermen have been asked to refrain from venturing into the sea.
